Because book one of Xanadu comes out today… What? Excuse me? It’s not Xanadu? Damn, I was really looking forward to illustrated versions of Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly. Oh well. This is Madame Xanadu, a new series from Vertigo written by major talent, Matt Wagner. Wagner is the genius behind the Grendel and Mage books, both art and script (if you’ve never read Mage, run out and get the trade paperbacks - fanfreakingtastic stuff). Wagner’s only scripting this book, but the art, by Amy Hadley, is gorge. Madame Xanadu is an old DC character getting a revamp due to her role in the DC Crises. I’ll let you know what I think.

Okay, here’s the interactive, help a sister out portion of the post. What books are you guys reading? Who are your favorite writers and artists? Who’s your dream team? We want to hear from you.

I heard that Madame Xanadu was coming back, but I wasn’t aware that Wagner was doing it. Awesome. I love his art.

For DC books I would pick up Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey for the kickass female characters — WW is now being written by Gail Simone, the top female writer of DC and she’s pretty fab. She also wrote Birds of Prey until now, and set it up nicely. Trinity is going to be a regular book spotlighting Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and their relationships to one another and the DCU. So far it’s had lovely art although I’m going back and forth on the story. I’d recommend any of the GOtham Knights books, but I’m a batgirl as you already know!

As for Marvel, I’ve been very disappointed in them lately. You could pick up some Runaways because that has been a consistently excellent book and Joss Whedon just finished his run. If you are a Whedon fan you can jump back on to Astonishing X-Men, he wrote the first 20 or so comics and it is arguably the best X-Men comic out there. I think it is for sure. Also if you haven’t already, I’d get into the Ultimates, but you’d have to read a little backstory for them. Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spidey, etc., are all fairly impressive. “Ultimates” is my personal favorite.

If you’re looking to grab some comics that are already all finished and more indie, check out Y The Last Man, Preacher, Transmetropolitan, and Wanted.

I give all these recc’s since I’m uncertain if you regularly read any of those or not. If so then ignore me!
