FanLib Five Q's
Karracaz just passed her one year anniversary here at FanLib, so let’s get the inside scoop, shall we?
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
My favorite fandom is Star Trek, the original series, followed probably by Voyager and Deep Space Nine. My all time favorite character who I identify with is Spock. He came into my life at an impressionable age, I suppose - late teens - and I felt his pain as my own. Spock is an outsider. He doesn’t fit in with Vulcan society or that of Earth. Plus, he’s an iconic character - loyal, honest, and willing to die for what he believes in.
My most favourite creator?
Now, that’s a hard one to answer. There’s so many books that I’ve enjoyed and TV shows and movies. My favourite authors would include Ursula LeGuin and C.J. Cherryh, along with A.C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. The artists I admire are mainly from this era like Frank Frazetta, who paints far off worlds and alien people. Science fiction in all its many forms has been part of my life since I was ten or so. I like the strange and otherworldly. TV shows would have to include Star Trek, of course, but also Doctor Who and the two Stargate series. Although I’m addicted to Lost right now.
What was your first fannish creation?
My first fannish creation that I can remember was Avellach, but I think I was born with a pen in my hand. I’ve always loved to write and to draw. From a very early age I can recall telling stories in my head.
What talent would you like to have that you don’t have?
LOL! Again, there’s so many things I’d love to be able to do! But I think I’m a perfectionist. If I could play an instrument or dance I’d have to be top notch at it.
What’s something no one would guess about you?
I doubt anyone would guess that as a little girl I wanted to be a ballerina. I’d only seen ballet on the television. But the first time I saw a ballet at the theatre it was such a disappointment. Though the dancers were still graceful and very skilled I’d never realized how much noise they made. All I heard was the thump, thump, thump as they bounced about the stage. Another dream dashed.

What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
My current favorite is The Other Boleyn Girl, and I can really identify with Mary Boleyn. Like Mary, I’ve never been very quick-witted as far as socializing goes. So in an effort not to embarrass myself by saying something stupid, I’ve always been rather quiet and in the shadow of my older siblings. Just as Anne Boleyn is extremely clever, my two older brothers are no doubt the best guitar players in my small town and musical geniuses. Mary is also the nicer of the two sisters. I’ve always had a “sweet and nice” side.
Who is your favorite creator?
My favorite creator would have to be Peter Jackson for directing Lord of the Rings. All three movies were very well done and true to the books. I get the same thrill watching the movies as I get reading the books. The actors were all true to the characters, and the forging of the swords and other weapons lived up to the high expectations set by Tolkien. Everything about the movie trilogy was perfect.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
My first fannish creation? The key word here is “ish” (is that a word?). When I was around seven years old, I made my own version of Sleeping Beauty. At the time I didn’t know what fan fiction was, of course. I only just started writing fanfiction a few years ago. The first true fanfic I wrote was a Left Behind story that I hope never sees the light of day.
What talent would you like to have that you don’t have?
I wish I were athletic - I’ve always lacked the coordination needed for sports. Throughout my childhood I was the odd man out; ballet, gymnastics, soccer, etc…I was never really good at anything I tried. I used to have a dream to go to the Olympics one day, but I eventually gave up on that dream and decided that writing was a good enough compensation for lacking athletic abilities.
What’s something people would never guess about you?
While I’m a serious writer, I also love history. I am absolutely enraptured by anything that happened over two thousand years ago. That is one of the reasons why I’m such an avid fan of Stargate SG-1; history and mythology plays such an important role in it.
Dravenuk joined us at the start of the year and has since delivered a number of stories and art works in a variety of fandoms — a true deep thinker.
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
Easy. That would be Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is just a normal and kinda geeky guy who struggles with his insecurities. He also feels pretty inferior amongst his friends, who include slayers, watchers, witches, werewolves, vampires and an ex-demon. But what he does have is heart and humor. He’s the caring, all-seeing human anchor of the group.
Who is your favorite creator?
That would be Joss “The Boss” Whedon. The man is a genius. He has a unique voice that just speaks perfectly to me. Buffy, Angel, Firefly…the upcoming Dollhouse. Love him.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
I’ve always written and drawn since I was a kid. I have done loads of pictures of Star Wars, Batman and various other things in my time. I think I wrote a Star Wars story about Han Solo when I was about 12. Can’t remember anymore. Of my newer stuff it would be my Buffy story called “Mornings After Glory.”

What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I actually identify with Lorelai Gilmore the most. I’m over-enthusiastic sometimes, I’m addicted to junk food and I’ve been dubbed the “Queen of Useless Information”…so my pop culture references will spice up a conversation. I love that she doesn’t take life too seriously and she’s not afraid to be herself.
Who is your favorite creator?
Because I’m completely addicted to Gilmore Girls, I’m going to have to say Amy Sherman-Palladino. I know that she wasn’t so careful with her characters toward the end, but at the beginning of the Gilmore Girls run, she put such love and thought into her characters. They’re so realistic, individual and intriguing.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
My first fannish creation (published) was my one-shot “Home Run”. I wrote it over a year ago and posted it, not really expecting to get sucked into the world of fan fiction. And here I am, almost 70 submissions later, still loving the fanfic thing. I wrote a lot of stuff before then that I didn’t publish.

What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
Tough question because I don’t exactly have a “favorite” fandom! Even with a favorite, it’s a tough question. I know a lot of Twilight fans would say Bella because… who doesn’t want to be with Edward (besides Team Jacob members!). But I’m not exactly clumsy or… brunette.
I’m going to say Selene from Underworld. We’re not exactly the same, but I feel like we share certain qualities. She’s headstrong and stuck in her ways. A bit of an elitist and totally hot! Ha! Kidding, sort of. I just adore her because I feel like her sometimes, totally betrayed by the ones I trusted and then casted out by all the rest. That was really emo and angsty! Sorry!
Who is your favorite creator?
I’m going to go with the most obvious first, Tim Burton. Ever since I saw Nightmare Before Christmas, I was hooked. I’m really into dark and disturbing things. He has a way of twisting the average and ordinary things into something sick and unsettling.
I also am an avid fan of Jason Schwartzman and his talent for anything and everything. I’m highly inspired by costume designers, namely Milena Canonero and her amazing (Oscar winning) costumes in Marie Antoinette. I love to watch movies that involve a lot of costuming and being historically accurate is a MUST.
So, I guess, I’m long-winded and don’t really have a top creator, just area specialists!

What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I think I identify the most with Jacqueline Roget from Young Blades. Although I’m certainly not masquerading as a male musketeer and, the last time I checked, this wasn’t 1753, I can definitely relate to her being the only girl in an otherwise all boys’ club. I’ve always had more male than female friends and, over the years, there is nothing about the sometimes zany logic of the male mind that fazes me anymore. Like Jacqueline, who is living in a garrison full of men, I’ve been the only girl holding down the fort in a house with four guys. For three years. That’s plenty of time to develop some mad skills in Mortal Kombat and build up a freakishly strong immune system. But friendship demographics and living arrangements aside, Jacqueline and I share a stubborn streak, a biting wit and a sometimes standoffish character. I can also somewhat relate to her leading a double life. By day, I’m you’re average university gal with a book tucked under her arm, a cellphone surgically attached to her ear and penciled in for partying on evenings and weekends, but when I get some time alone, just me and my lap top, I’m the Daring Hat Trick: fandom geek extraordinaire, closet gamer and a dedicated writer. Secretly, however, I’d trade in my Mortal Kombat for some real combat any day - chasing highwaymen, clashing swords and racing horses sounds a lot more exciting, and having somebody like D’Artagnan around wouldn’t hurt either.
Who is your favorite creator?

What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
That’s a touch decision. I think I will have to go with Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights. I have always been more of a leader than a follower, and sports have always been a major part of my life - I am currently studying physical education and am in my sophomore year in college under that major. I guess I can see Eric’s viewpoint on being someone that people can turn to for advice and leadership. We have our bad days, but we put others before ourselves to help make them better people.
Who is your favorite creator?
I couldn’t narrow this question down to just one person. John Steinbeck is probably the most brilliant and creative author I have read. I remember reading Of Mice and Men when I was just a little kid and relating so closely to both of the main characters. I also enjoy The Grapes of Wrath. The Depression era really fascinates me. It was a time in our nation’s history where we pulled together as a team and worked our way through a major problem. I’m also going to have to give a nod to George Strait. After fifty number one’s and twenty years of song writing, the man is still at the top of country music.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
Our resident Hellboy expert, epalladino takes on the dreaded (okay, not so much but I’m setting a mood here) FanLib 5 Q’s! (Insert dramatic music here.)
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I most identify with the character Hellboy from the movie of the same title. Even though there are some differences, I also resonate with the Hellboy from Mike Mignola’s original comics books - even though I’m a woman, there something in him that appeals to the masculine side of my nature. There’s also something in the way Ron Perlman portrays him in the movie - the over-grown adolescent who just never fits in no matter how hard he tries with the lack of self esteem that can stem from this; the child who loves, admires, and respects a parental-figure, and yet, at the same time doesn’t understand the parent and feels that the parent doesn’t understand him. This all completely resonates with who I was myself as an adolescent and who I can still be at times. Although, with me the, the problematic relationship is between mother and daughter - I can see so much of our relationship in the father/son trope that is narrated in the film.
Who is your favorite creator?
For TV, I’m hard pressed to suggest a favorite creator. I would say that my favorite television personality is Jeremy Brett. His portrayal of the character of Sherlock Holmes is, in my opinion, one of the best versions I’ve ever seen.

For this week’s 5 Q’s, we didn’t have to look far. Say hello to FanLib’s Schinders.
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
Not sure I can commit to one fandom or character. Some days I’m very Lorelai Gilmore – smart and wacky; on others I’m a bit Andrea from 90210 – anxious and insecure; and then there are always angry, agro Starbuck days.
Who is your favorite creator?
It’s a mighty close call. Neil Gaiman: not only is his writing beautiful and fantastic (in every sense of the word), but he’s so prolific it seems there’s always something new by him. He’s second only to Diana Wynne Jones, who’s been my favorite author since the 80’s. She wrote the novel Howl’s Moving Castle, has several series that are more than fabulous (check out Crestomanci and/or the Dalmark Quartet), and she did a “boarding school for witches” book long before JK. Not to mention, Gaiman credits her as one of his big influences, so…
Skywalker195 takes on the FanLib 5 Q’s.
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I most identify with Cloud from Final Fantasy VII because, like him, I’ve had to face many difficulties in my life, which have pushed me to the limit, and yet somehow I got over them.
Who is your favorite creator?
George Lucas is my favorite creator since he created Star Wars (which, of course, is my favorite series ever) which inspired games, books, movies, and TV shows that I love today.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
My first fan creation ever was “The Dark Knight.” It is a story that I have actually posted, deleted, edited, and then reposted several times and is currently undergoing that process again (hopefully for the last time).
What talent would you like to have that you don’t have?
Well, besides impossible talents that I would also like to have, I would love it if I could paint because it’s about the only thing in “the arts” field that I can’t do.
What’s something people would never guess about you?
Most people probably wouldn’t guess that I do so much writing and video editing, while I also remain a serious gamer.
Evai is one of our newer members, but she’s tearing up the forums and is an avid reader, writer, and commenter. Time to face the 5 Q’s!
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
Ah, ye gods this is a tough one. I’d have to say Rangiku Masumoto from Bleach. She typically seems like a happy, mildly hyper, friendly person but knows when it’s time to get the job done. She seems to be very serious in her loyalties, and that’s something that is really important to me. I stick by my family and friends. I am extremely protective over the people I love. Masumoto is also very deep in her own right. She’s hurt badly when Ichimaru betrays her, but she’s strong and gets through it. I prefer to keep going no matter how bad it gets and stay strong.
Allura99 takes on the soul-searching FanLib 5 Q’s!
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I would have to say Simon Tam from Firefly. Like him, I’m a young doctor. Also social situations can confound me. But thankfully, I’m not on the run from the government. No comment on the crazy sister thing, though.
Who is your favorite creator?
Joss Whedon, hands down. Everything he has done has just blown me away. I can’t wait to see Dollhouse.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
I didn’t discover fanfiction until I was in high school. After months of reading it, I decided to try my hand at writing. A Voltron fanfic called “The Heart of a Lion” was the very first fanfic I wrote. But my Sailor Moon story “Jupiter’s Gone” was the first I shared with the rest of the world. And the rest, as they say, is history.
What talent would you like to have that you don’t have?
I would love to be able to draw. But anything beyond stick figures is just horrible.
What’s something people would never guess about you?
I’m usually reserved and quiet. However, when it’s time for karaoke, I’m a diva. It’s just so much fun.
TheWeasleyBoys takes a stab at our five fannish questions.
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I took one look at this question, and the first character that came to mind was Toph Bei Fong from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I haven’t exactly been born blind, mind you, but for a time as a child, my one eye had trouble focusing. As a result, I would get really stressed out from just about everything, socializing with people included, and then I would get headaches and then get sick to my stomach, etc. (I won’t add any more details here, because the readers might get sick themselves.) So the idea of having to use your other senses to tell what is going on around you kind of always stuck with me, because I would do things like run my hand along a wall when I was walking through the hallway. That, and the fact that I’ve also kind of always been sheltered from childhood onward. I’m not always followed around by a bunch of Orient-inspired mansion guards, of course, but there is a lot of stuff about the world I’d like to see someday… and I’m sure I will.
Who is your favorite creator?
Okay, I have to admit, I’m torn between J.K. Rowling (the author of the Harry Potter series), Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino (the makers of Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Peter Berg (the brain behind Friday Night Lights). All four of these people have done their part to bring new, unforeseen worlds to the general populace; be it a dark dungeon where potions are made, temples where Air Nomads reside, or packed football stadiums where games are won and lost. Each world definitely has its perks, so I can’t say for certain if either of these can be put higher on the list than the others.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
Oh, here’s the big question I was afraid to answer… LOL!
Dare to Dream does just that and also answers our FIVE questions.
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
I suppose I would identify with Hinata from Naruto the most. I’m really shy and have a panic attack when I talk to the guy I like, and my face is always bright red.
Who is your favorite creator?
I don’t really know how to answer that… But I guess my favorite book would be by Anne McCaffrey.
What was YOUR first fannish creation?
My very first fanfic would be a Naruto one… Kakashi Love story.
What talent would you like to have that you don’t have?
I would have to say singing for this one… I’ve always wanted to sing like my friends, but no one in my family can sing well at all.
What’s something people would never guess about you?
Something people would never guess about me… I’m not really sure. I’m pretty much an open book, according to some of my friends. But if I had to think of something, it would be that I can be a pretty adequate liar if I need to be.
Maryilee, the mad forum poster (LOL) takes the hot seat today!
What character in your favorite fandom do you most identify with?
It would have to be Gary Hobson, from Early Edition. I just love the whole reluctant hero aspect of him and wish the show would have dug a little deeper into that. The very best episodes of that show had a darker tone, and those are the ones that captured my interest and make me want to write fanfic for it.
Who is your favorite creator?
My favorite creator right now would have to be Peter Berg, the executive producer of Friday Night Lights. He really has allowed that show to do some unique things as far as filming and acting goes. The actors can ad-lib, and they don’t have to hit marks; the cameras follow them instead of them having to be in certain spots for the camera. It enables the viewer to feel like a fly on the wall of the characters’ homes.
Before FNL, I never really noticed how most other shows film in a standard way. Now, when I watch them, it seems so predictable. There may be a close-up of one character, then a close-up of the other reacting and then a wide shot. With FNL, it’s different. You get a close-up, but it’s really tight and the back of the other person’s shoulder or head might be taking up half the screen. That makes the viewer truly feel like they are right there, looking over that other character’s shoulder. Also, they’ll focus on unusual things, like just the hands of a character, and you’ll see them twisting their rings or something like that. Those little moments bring the show to life like no other.
