I got up early Sunday morning and went to a meditation class. Before I left the house I checked my emails, had a little tea, etc., and I put the computer to sleep. When I returned, it would not wake up. I wrapped it warmly in swaddling clothes and rushed it to the emergency room — The Apple Store. I love Apple; I’m two weeks out of service plan, and they gave me a new motherboard free. But for two and a half days I was without computer, jonesing like a junkie, and my poor little computer was so ill and distressed. You might say there was major Schinders Whumping going on, as our Glossary defines the term: to put your characters through literary torture. I feel my torture was literary, because it precluded my writing. No fear, my computer and I are all better; otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this.
Are there characters you love to Whump? That you feel deserve Whumping? Do you feel like you’ve been Whumped?

There’s a term for torturing your characters? Uh, oh…I sense yet another new nickname coming on…
I do tend to put certain characters (a.k.a. my favorite characters) though…not-so-nice situations. But I think it helps the story. I don’t just torture characters (or “whump” them, I suppose…) for fun (though it may seem that way to some
). Characters that receive whumping from me don’t usually deserve it. Poor James Norrington often has to bear the most pain in my stories…but Lucius Malfoy is not far behind…
Haha! Like Leila, I tend to put my favourite characters through quite a bit of torment…Ryan Wolfe particularly. lol
Kinda like tub-thumping - character whumping. This is Leila’s word all the way, lol. Ok, mine too. I also like to create characters just to kill them off, much abuse along the way. hehe
lol. We could start a whumping club
Really, the first thing I think before diving into a story is “Am I going to kill a main character off?” I love me some drama! And nothing creates drama like a death in the fic family - that or a surprise pregnancy. That doesn’t work very often in Star Trek, though. ![]()
Well, Imperial Highness Detective Leila Norrington, we’re not going to start calling you Imperial Wumper Detective Leila Norrington if that’s what you’re thinking.
At least, I’m not going to.
Well, uh… I haven’t whumped yet, I don’t think so anyways.
I’m not really sure.
I try to keep up on trends in my fandom’s fanfic, and it seems that for the past year or two, Alan Tracy whumping has been very, very prevalent. (I even whump on him myself in The White Winds). Right now though, the tide is turning, and the favorite character to whump on more and more is Scott Tracy.
You can’t have your hurt/comfort fics without whumping on someone…
[...] has gone into a coma again, so she will be back next week with a new word for discussion. Will the whumping ever [...]

I think to be realistic, you have to whump - at least sometimes. I like to create OC’s for whumping. I try to get readers really involved in their story, then whump the jibblies out of ‘em….
…*innocent face* They get better.
